Water as a Path for Societal Adaptation: Creating Synergies Across the GGA to Drive Action
Wednesday, 18 June, 13:30 - 14:45 CEST
Berlin Room, SB62 Bonn Climate Conference
Join us for the SB62 Bonn Climate Conference session organized by Alliance for Global Water Adaptation (AGWA), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, GmbH (GIZ), International Water Management Institute (IWMI), Stockholm International Water Institute, Sanitation and Water for All (SWA), WaterAid, and Water for Climate Pavilion partners.
Water and healthy freshwater ecosystems are at the heart of climate resilience and are relevant to all GGA targets. The side event is designed as a follow-up to the SB62 GGA technical workshop and will explore the interconnected nature of the GGA targets and positive synergies that can be generated across them to avoid siloed responses to climate change.
COP28 in Dubai set the stage for the implementation of the Global Goal on Adaptation, establishing a framework to guide the achievement of the GGA and monitor collective progress. Under the UAE Framework for Global Climate Resilience, Parties identified key thematic and policy targets that can support adaptation action. A cohort of technical experts, appointed by the UNFCCC, have now proposed a set of indicators for Parties to use in the measurement and reporting of their adaptation actions. As currently formulated, these indicators represent progress towards defining and measuring headway on the GGA. However, indicators for each target have been developed at the moment separately and the inherent interconnectedness between the different targets is not yet well accounted for, which could lead to missed opportunities for improved adaptation outcomes.
This event is designed as a follow up to the 16 June GGA workshop, convening technical experts from across the thematic and policy targets of the GGA, as well as party delegates, and external adaptation experts, for a roundtable discussion on what is still needed to ensure coherence across thematic and between thematic and policy targets, and how these targets can support Parties looking to enhance their adaptation plans, with the goal of building comprehensive societal, ecological, and economic resilience. Under the UAE Framework, water is both a thematic target and a cross-cutting element, with linkages to all the targets. We will use this thematic connector as a frame to illuminate the interconnected nature of the targets and discuss how water resilience measures can support holistic and transformative approaches to climate adaptation by integrating, among others, agriculture, human health, ecosystems, disaster risk, and infrastructure.
