Batu Krishna Uprety

Batu has worked for the Government of Nepal nearly three decades from 1983 to 2012 and retired from the Head (Joint-Secretary, Technical) of Climate Change Management Division, then Ministry of Environment in May 2012. Batu has contributed to institutionalising Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) system in Nepal during 1990 and 2007, and climate change activities from 2007 to May 2012. Batu led the National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA) preparation process at its initial stage and climate change policy formulation process which were approved by the Government in September 2010, in January 2011. He also led the development of the national framework on local adaptation plan for action (LAPA) which was approved by the Government in November 2011. Batu also served as Team Leader of the National Adaptation Plan (NAP) Formulation Process led by the Government of Nepal from May 2016 to May 2017. 

Batu chaired the LDC Expert Group (LEG) of UNFCCC process for 2014 and 2015 and offered his service for about additional 6 years as member and Vice-Chair of the LEG. He is currently included in the LDC Roster of Experts on NAPs, developed by the LEG, a constituted body of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Mr. Uprety has contributed to accessing climate finance from LDC Fund, and bilateral and multilateral sources for the implementation of NAPA prioritised adaptation actions and climate resilience programmes. After May 2012, he worked for UNEP, UNESCAP and UNIDO as consultant. Currently, he is involved, for limited period, in using Water Tracker Tool in Nepal's national climate and water resources policies and plans.
